ILC Conference 2009: Securing Rights to Land for Peace and Food Security

  • The second day of the conference was dedicated to a more hands-on exchange of ideas. The day was filled with a series of parallel workshops on land, water and forest rights; land rights and climate change, women’s access to land and new commercial pressures on land.

    Delegates gathered to hear a review of the previous day’s activities and a welcome was extended to those who were just joining the deliberations. They then moved on to their knowledge sharing sessions.

    Land, water and forest rights
    The working session on land, water and forest rights was facilitated by Ujjwal Pradhan.
     
    A series of case studies from around the world
    Cases were presented by Dilraj Khanal, FECOFUN,Nepal, Carlos Morales Cifuentes,UVOC, Guatemala and Haki Kola,NACFPA, Albania.
     
     
    Interventions:
     
     
    The session on climate change was chaired by Dr Madiodio Niasse, Director, ILC
     
     
    Presentations were made by Ibrah Boukar, Code Rural, Niger; Alejandro Laos, SER-Peru amd Jean-Philippe Audinet, IFAD

    The session was facilitated by Sabine Pallas, ILC
     
    About WRAP in three countries
    V B Ravat described shared lessons on the WRAP project in Nepal, India & Indonesia
     
    Lea Montes spoke about NITLAPAN, Nicaragua
     
    Lessons learned from various organizations were highlighted.

    Scoping study and case studies
    Mike Taylor, ILC facilitated the session on commercial pressures on land.
     
    Not opportunity but theft
    Michel Merlet, AGTER, France gave an overview of the scoping study carried out by AGTER.
       
     
    A real phenomenon with many faces
    Discussions were animated with interventions from around the world.
     
    A place to exchange ideas
    The marketplace of ideas gave delegates the opportunity to present their publications and projects.
     
     
  • The day ended with regional caucuses from Africa, Asia and LatinAmerica.
