Gender Specialist-Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources
WWF is looking for a Gender Specialist to support the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project. This person can be based in Peru, Colombia or Brazil. The Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project will work across the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Peru, and Suriname to improve representation of indigenous peoples in governance of Amazon forests and waters in the face of the development of infrastructure and extraction of natural resources, so they may contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and prevention of land-based greenhouse gas emissions in and around their lands.
Under the supervision of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project Chief of Party, the Gender Specialist will be a member of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project Team, responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of a gender strategy for the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project.
- Design and implement a gender gap analysis, and develop a participatory gender strategy for the project addressing how gender will be integrated into the design and implementation of project strategies, taking into account the roles of women and men, and encouraging and including women and vulnerable groups.
- Set well defined goals and develop an action plan to ensure that gender is incorporated into the fabric of the project
- Oversee the implementation of the project gender strategy, working closely with WWF field offices, government and non-government partners, and local communities
- Develop gender performance indicators to track project progress towards gender equality, as part of the program’s monitoring and evaluation plan
- Collaborate with monitoring and evaluation specialist to collect and analyze gender and sex-disaggregated data, and propose actions that will address identified gender-related issues as part of the gender strategy.
- Ensure gender-equitable access and participation to the opportunities and resources associated with AIRR goals and implementation.
- Review proposed gender-related activities within annual work plan of each implementing partner and recommend improvements where needed
- Incorporate gender mainstreaming into the project’s capacity building plan, the communication/knowledge management plan, the social inclusion plan, and the M&E plan as well as the four AIRR Objectives
- Provide input relating to gender in project’s training needs assessment and undertake gender training as needed for the project
- Elevate the importance of gender awareness in marginalized groups, Indigenous Peoples (IP) life plans, and regional IP priorities
- Develop a gender baseline at the beginning of the project and undertake gender audits as needed
Knowledge: A Masters degree in women’s studies, social sciences, international development or related field
Experience: Candidate must have at least three to five years of outstanding experience in gender-related work in the developing world.
Skills and Abilities: The ideal candidate for this position will take initiative and have a high level of enthusiasm for his/her work and for the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project along with strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal and team-player skills as well as an ability to work independently are essential. Strong Spanish and English language skills are required, with Portuguese preferred. S/he should be effectively able to prioritize work, focusing on priorities without forgetting other tasks, and using initiative and good judgement. Ability to work to deadlines is essential. Good facilitation and coaching skills as well as experience with indigenous peoples are an advantage. Must be able to travel extensively to the field, in sometimes rugged conditions (up to 25% travel).
