Women across Africa plan to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to demand #landrightsnow
A woman has lost her husband and has no rights to their household land; a biofuel company pushes another smallholder farmer off her land; while a community's land and water is poisoned by a mining company. These three stories are part of an animated video to promote the Kilimanjaro Initiative in October 2016.
Supported by the International Land Coalition, Actionaid, Oxfam, PLAAS, WILDAF and TGNP Mtandao, the Kilimanjaro Initiative seeks to mobilise rural women across Africa towards a historic moment at the foot of the iconic mountain. Four regional caravans are expected to depart simultaneously from the North, South, East, and West, converging in a mass African rural women’s assembly. This will be followed by an ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro by a delegation of women to symbolically launch and proclaim a charter of principles and demands on women’s access to and control over their land.
2016 has been declared by the African Union as the “African Year of Human Rights with particular focus on the Rights of Women” and October marks a crucial month with the International Day of Rural Women on October 15th and World Food Day on October 16th. Shining a spotlight on rural women’s right to land and natural resources could not have been timelier.
Since the Initiative's launch in March 2016, preparations are steadily under way to mobilise rural women across Africa for the mass assembly and climb. So far, Uganda and Kenya are among several countries that organized “Mini Kilis”: in June, 500 women from northern Uganda climbed Baker’s Partiko and in August more than 500 Kenyan women in Mombasa marched to the peak of Nguu Tatu Hills to speak out for their land rights and to promote the Kilimanjaro Initiative.
In order for this to be a success, women’s leadership and supporter mobilisation, from across the globeis essential. You can follow the progress of the campaign via Facebook and Twitter , by using the hashtag #women2kilimanjaro and sharing your messages of support!
