The GLF roadshow is on its way: the National Organising Committee meets with relevant government agencies in Indonesia

Thursday, 16th November 2017

Members of the National Organising Committee (NOC) for the International Land Coalition's 2018 Global Land Forum (GLF) are carrying out a series of visits to various high-level government institutions in Indonesia.

These visits, to the so-called GLF roadshows, are aimed at building support for the upcoming Global Land Forum (GLF) which will be held from 22-27 September in Bandung. The roadshow is the result of an agreement between NOC members and the Executive Staff of the President of the Indonesian Republic (KSP) to gather support in-country. In 2016, The President's office has already signed an MOU with Konsorsium Pembaruan Agraria (KPA), the ILC member in Indonesia leading preparations for the event, last year when Indonesia was selected by ILC's Council as the host country for the 2018 GLF. The GLF is planned to be officially opened by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

“Involving the government as part of the committee is a further step after we have successfully built GLF ownership with almost all major CSO organizations in Indonesia," said Dewi Kartika, secretary general of KPA, and chairperson of the NOC.

The GLF roadshow visited important government agencies such as the Ministry of Agrarian and Land Cadastre (ATR), the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), and the Ministry of Village Development and Transmigration, the programme to move landless people from densely populated areas of Indonesia to less populous areas of the country. The next visits planned are to the National Commission of Human Rights and local governments in Bandung and West Java. During these visits, NOC members will be accompanied by a staff member from the Presidential staff office (KSP).

On 10 November, the NOC and the President's staff were received by the Environment Minister, Ms. Siti Nurbaya, who expressed her full support for the organisation of the 2018 Global Land Forum in Bandung. "We will support the GLF. With the GLF we will be increasingly encouraged to implement social forestry agenda for the welfare of the people, "said Siti.

During the meeting at the Ministry of Agrarian and Land Cadastre,  with the Board of Directors, the Director-General confirmed that the Ministry was ready to assist with the GLF. In addition to appointing an official to participate in NOC, they will also work hard to implement the government's agrarian reform agenda to show that Indonesia is taking significant steps to improve tenure rights, setting an example for the rest of the world.

On 8 of November, the roadshow continued with a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affair (MFA), during which the Director of diplomatic security, Mr. Teguh Wadoyo, conveyed his support to ensure visas and security for participants, asking for a list of invitees to address any diplomatic issues as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Village Development and Transmigration also welcomed the arrival of the NOC, accompanied by Usep Setiawan of KSP, on 13 November, committing to assist the organisation of the event, while working on the implementation of agrarian reform at the village level. The meeting was attended by one Director General and dozens of Ministry Directors.

In addition to introducing the GLF, the roadshow provided an opportunity to request each government institution to participate in the National Organising Committee, as well as to deliver invitations to attend high-level meetings across Government agencies to be facilitated by the Executive Office of the Presidential on 21 November at the presidential palace. A high-level meeting with international organizations to request their support for the GLF will also be held on 20 November at the offices of the Ford Foundation in Jakarta.

“We hope that through these high-level meetings, Government, CSOs and International organizations will work together and have a sense of ownership in organizing a successful GLF,” added Dewi Kartika, chairperson of the NOC.
