The deep divide evident at the recent High Level Conference on Food Security in Rome between defining a future of ‘food sovereignty' based on smallholder production vs ‘food security' provided more by large-scale producers is likely will demand stakeholders – not least ILC members – to more clearly articulate how they position themselves in responding to the food crisis. IIED has just pre-released the first three chapters of a book coming out in late-2008 on Food Sovereignty.

From 3 rd – 5 th June 2008, 5,159 representatives of 181 countries, including 42 heads of state, met in Rome at the ‘High Level Conference on World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy'. However ensuring access to land for smallholders seemed disappointingly low on the agenda of most speakers.

ILC at the 16th UN Commission on Sustainable Development:
Growing insecurity - Land and Vulnerable People Towards an Action Agenda to Strengthen Poor People's Access to Land.

New and rapidly increasing trends such as accelerated agrofuel production, rising food prices and carbon-trading mechanisms are generating a global commercially-driven demand for new land, putting poor and vulnerable land users at increasing risk of loosing the land on wich their livelihood depends.
The 16th session of the UNCSD is an opportunity for creating awareness on these issues within the international community. The International Land Coalition, also by means of this issues paper draft containing problems to be addressed and possible solutions, aims at initiating a process for strengthening poor people's access to land against these new global threats.

Kenya Land Alliance (KLA) and Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) partnered to produce a series of reports on the cost and human rights dimensions of land grabbing, exposing the beneficiaries of corruption who hold, have held or are seeking public office. This volume looks at the plunder of Kenya's state corporations and protected lands.

Minimizing the Risks to Maximize the Opportunities - Large-scale biofuel production may increase marginalization of women -
New study on biofuel production focuses on gender 21 April 2008, Rome – Rapid increases in the large-scale production of liquid biofuels in developing countries could exacerbate the marginalization of women in rural areas threatening their livelihoods, according to a new FAO study. The study notes that large-scale plantations for the production of liquid biofuels require an intensive use of resources and inputs to which small farmers, particularly women, traditionally have limited access. The growing global demand for liquid biofuels, combined with increased land requirements, could put pressure on so-called “marginal” lands, which provide key subsistence functions to the rural poor and are frequently farmed by women, the report noted. “Unless policies are adopted in developing countries to strengthen the participation of small farmers, especially women in biofuel production by increasing their access to land, capital and technology - gender inequalities are likely to become more marked and women's vulnerability to hunger and poverty further exacerbated,” said Yianna Lambrou, co-author of the paper entitled Gender and Equity Issues in Liquid Biofuels Production .

Getting to the Heart of the Matter: Powers over Property. Devolved land governance - the key to tackling the land issue in Kenya?
A contribution to the current vibrant debate on land in Kenya following recent upheavals. Argues the need for a radical restructure of the way property relations are governed because what is being contested today is not just property but power over property. Makes practical suggestions for genuinely local democratisation of land governance. Need to act on identified illegal allocation of public land; devolve, not de-concentrate, land administration and to the most local level possible; and vest radical title in real communities, not district/tribal territorial domains.
