The Africa organisational leadership programme
The International Land Coalition (ILC) and Maliasili Initiatives are proud to launch the Africa organisational leadership programme and invites ILC members to apply to join.
Local civil society organisations (CSOs) play a central role on the front lines of struggles for land rights around the world. The ability of local and national CSOs to facilitate land rights reforms nationally, support local communities and constituencies to secure their rights, and scale up more secure tenure, is a critical determinant in struggles over land rights around the world, within the ILC network and beyond.
The capacity of local organisations and their leadership to achieve lasting change is strongly shaped not only by their technical skills, passion and commitment; but by their ability to build, grow, and sustain effective organisations that provide a platform for them to deliver on their mission. Skilled, effective, and capable local organizations, with strong capacity for exercising systemic leadership, are critical to achieving the kinds of changes in the land rights arena that are needed in Africa today.
The organisational leadership programme
Maliasili supports the organizational development and capacity of leading African land rights, natural resource and conservation organizations. As a global network, the International Land Coalition aims to build strategic alliances and enable its members to drive change in their own local and national contexts. Maliasili and ILC are collaborating on a pilot Organisational leadership programme that aims to strengthen the leadership capacity of a selected group of ILC Africa members over the next six months.
The insights and lessons from the pilot will be shared in the Global Land Forum in Indonesia in September 2018, which creates an important opportunity to exchange experiences and to stimulate a wider conversation with ILC members from other regions. This program comprises an immersive leadership development programme, taking place through two week-long cohort-based workshops that will take place in East Africa during May and July, 2018, and a mentoring phase in between workshops. The programme’s two core pillars are as follows:
- Providing leadership development training to a select group of leaders of ILC Africa members who apply to participate in the programme, in order to improve those leaders’ individual skills, self-awareness, ability to facilitate collective action, and ultimately strengthen the performance of their organisations.
- To provide a unique opportunity for peer learning amongst the participants across a cohort of leading regional CSOs working on land rights. This will also include exposing these leaders to other regional and global land rights leaders who can provide important perspectives and advice related to networks, organisational development, fundraising, and other key issues.
The expected outcomes for the selected participants are:
- Enhanced understanding of options, practices, tools and frameworks for improving a range of key concerns and functions within participants’ organisations, and practical skills in applying those tools in solving their organisational challenges.
- Ability to map out own organisational challenges and organize a possible plan to address them.
- Improved leadership and management capacity for individual and organisational performance.
- Improved capacity to facilitate and manage systems change through effective collaboration, stronger relationships, and clearer strategic thinking and action.
- Establishment of a stronger and more diverse peer network of leading regional land rights organisations, with new possibilities for future collaborations, initiatives, and exchanges.
Application process selection criteria
- Interest in and commitment to improving individual and organisational leadership and overall organisational growth, performance and impact.
- Individual and organisational commitment to a ‘systems leadership’ or collaborative approach, including a culture of strong collaboration with other organisations working on similar issues.
- Weight will be given in the selection process to active involvement in and contribution to National Engagement Strategies supported by ILC and its members in Africa.
- The programme is open to applications from ILC Africa members.
- The programme will be delivered in English so English fluency is a requirement.
- Branches of international organisations are not eligible.
- Only active members of ILC are eligible.
- Each accepted organisation will send two participants to the programme.
- One participant should be the CEO or executive director, and another member of senior management or organisational leadership (e.g. board chair).
- No substitutions of personnel or delegation of participation are allowed.
- In line with ILC's gender justice principle, we encourage gender-balanced nominations.
- Both nominated participants must be available to participate in the programme for the full weeks of May 14-18 and July 9-13. No delegation of participation is allowed.

The application letter should clearly address the following points:
- Explain the motivation and interest for participating in the programme. This should include briefly describing key organisational leadership, development, and management challenges and how you hope participation in the programme will help address those.
- Provide the names and organisational positions of the two nominated participants.
- Confirm that the nominated participants will be available for participation during the weeks of May 14-18 and July 9-13. Note that no substitutions or delegation of participation is allowed.
- Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by Maliasili staff prior to final selection by Maliasili and ILC.
- Participant selection will be made by March 31, 2018.
