Land Reporting Initiative

ILC’s Land Reporting Initiative (LRI) aims to facilitate the gathering of evidence on access to land and tenure security for poor and vulnerable groups, and to ensure that this evidence has an impact on policy formulation, implementation, and reforms. The LRI was developed in response to the needs of ILC members for better data on land rights issues as a basis for more effective advocacy and improved land policies. At the global level, the initiative has coordinated inputs from ILC members through activities such as the Land Watch campaigns and the development of a land monitoring handbook. LRI is also a core initiative of ILC regional networks in Asia and Latin America, and has recently begun supporting civil society organizations in Africa to develop land monitoring initiatives to influence national, sub-regional and regional processes.

The central goal of the Land Reporting Initiative is to make sure that evidence is gathered on the land access and tenure security of poor and vulnerable groups, and impact policy and reforms processes.

LRI expected results

  • Creation of a stronger evidence base for advocacy which will have an impact both on public awareness concerning the tenure rights of poor women and men, and the formulation and implementation of laws and policies affecting such rights; and
  • Strengthened capacity of land-concerned actors to engage in advocacy and policy dialogue, as well as to influence the design and implementation of pro-poor land policies.

The Land Reporting Initiative components

  • Land Portal: Easy access, dynamic, decentralised and participatory tool for aggregating and sharing land-governance related information and facilitating networking among land-concerned individuals and organisations.
  • Land Watch: Support multi-stakeholder monitoring of land issues and cross learning to catalyze inclusive multi-stakeholder dialogue on land governance issues at the national and regional level.
  • Land indicators and indices: Develop Global Land indicators on democratic governance of land and in line with regional and national initiatives.
