UN and International Agencies

  • AGCS - African Centre for Gender and Social Development
    The overall objective of AGCS - which is part of the United Nations Economic Comission for Africa - is to inform development within Africa with a view to making it more gender-responsive. The AGCS publishes GenderNet, a publication that looks at a variety of gender issues across the continent.
  • DAW - Division for the Advancement of Women
    The DAW - which is part of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs - advocates for the improvement of the status of women in the world. It offers a variety of tools on gender-related policies, standards and institutions. Finally, it provides substantive support to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
  • FAO - Gender and Development 
    The Gender, Equity and Rural Employement Division (ESW) suupports FAO’s efforts to promote the economic and social well-being of the rural poor. Part of this work is done under Gender and Development, which is responsible for coordinating the implementation of FAO’s action on women and gender issues.
  • IFAD - Gender 
    This webpage illustrates IFAD’s evolving apporaches to gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment, demonstrating how the approaches have developed in recent years and how they differ across regions.
  • OECD-DAC Gender Equality and Development
    The Development Cooperation Directorate’s Gender Equality page provides access to information and documents on gender equality issues in OECD member countries, per theme or country.
  • IANWGE - UN Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality
    The IANWGE is a network of UN offices, specialised agencies, funds and programmes. All UN member entities are represented in the Network.
  • INSTRAW - UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women
    INSTRAW is the leading UN institute devoted to research, training and knowledge management to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • OHCHR - Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
    The OHCHR’s mandate is to promote and to protect all human rights. Since January 2008, it took responsability for servicing the Committee of CEDAW, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (1981).
  • CEDAW South Asia
    This webiste seeks to facilitate the implementation of CEDAW in South Asia by making knowledge resources, country updates, opportunity announcements and any updates on developments relating to CEDAW int he region available.
  • OSAGI - Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women
    The Office’s main objective is to strengthen the effective implementation of the Millenium Declaration, the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW).
  • UNIFEM - United Nations Development Fund for Women
    UNIFEM provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies to foster women’s empowerment and gender equality.
  • WomenWatch
    Women Watch is an interagency website that works as central gateway to resources on the promotion of gender eqaulity and the empowerment of women throughout the UN system. Links to all entities specialised in gender issues are included.
  • World Bank - Gender and Development 
    The WB website provides useful links to regional and thematic pages, data and tools for gender mainstreaming, news, documents and reports.

Information Sites

  • BRIDGE
    Bridge is a knowledge service from the Institute of Development Studies (University of Sussex, UK). It provides a fast route to gender information, bridging the gaps between theory, policy and practice with accessible and divers gender information in print and online.
  • CGIAR - Gender and Diversity
    This programme is part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The webpage provides resources, news and posts for job vacancies for female scientists.
  • DIMITRA Project 
    DIMITRA is a participatory information and communication project, which contributes to improving visibility of rural populations, women in particular. Its main goal is to empower rural women and to improve their living conditions and status by highlighting the extent and value of their contributions.
  • ELDIS - Gender Resource Guide
    Eldis is a knowledge service from the Institute of Development Studies (University of Sussex, UK). It provides thousands of documents on topics related to development work. All documents are available for free.
  • FAO - Gender and Land Rights Database
    This crucial and easy-to-access resource on Gender and Land Rights contains country-level information on social, economic, political and cultural issues related to the gender inequalities embedded in land rights. By using the database you can find, select, compare and package information on the following six categories: National Legal frames, International Treaties and Conventions, Customary Law, Land Tenure and Related Institutions, Civil Society Organisations, Selected Land Related Statistics.
  • ROFAF
    The website - in French - seeks to give visibility to the activities of its members and promote networking. The site also offers resources and information about women’s rights in the news and organisations that finance women’s rights work.
  • SIYANDA
    SIYANDA is an on-line database for gender and development materials from around the world. The collection includes tools, case studies, policy papers and research. SIYANDA is also an interactive space where gender practioners can share ideas, experiences and resources.
  • Wikigender
    Wikigender is an information sharing platform on gender, officially launched in 2008 by the OECD Development Centre to facilitate the exchange and improve the knowledge about gender-related issues around the world. A special focus of this project is to collect empirical evidence and to identify adequate statistics and measurement tools for gender equality.
  • WLLA - Women’s Land Link Africa 
    Women’s Land Link Africa is a joint initiative of organisations dedicated to the improvement of women’s land and housing rights in Africa. The purpose of WLLA is not to re-create but rather to enhance and support already ongoing work on women’s housing and land rights in Africa.
  • Women in Politics - Bibliographic Database 
    This bibliographic databse - powered by the International organisation of Parliaments (IPU) - contains links and references to legal instruments, declarations, studies and articles. These documents include regional, international and thematic perspectives. The bibliography takes the form of an on-line search engine and is regularly updated.

International Organisations

  • AWID - Association for Women’s Rights in Development 
    AWID is an international membership organisation connecting, informing and mobilising people and organisations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women’s human rights. Their goal is to cause policy, institutional and individual change that will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.
  • Gender Links
    Gender links is an organisation committed to a Southern Africa in which women and men are able to participate equally in all aspects of public and private life. It is part of the Steering Committee of the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance. Its vision is achieved trough media, governance and gender justice programme. The website offers several resources, publications and tools on gender and women’s empowerment. Gender Links also developed a Gender and Media Diversity Center.
  • ICRW - The International Centre for Research on Women 
    The ICRW works with partner organisations and governments throughout the world to promote gender equitable development, reduce poverty, and change the lives of millions of women and girls and their communities - undertaking focused, evidence-based, action-oriented research; providing technical assistance to partner organisations, donors and governements; and advocating for new or improved policies.
  • Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance - Gender and Development 
    Throughout the world women face obstacles for their participation in politics. These barriers exist in prevailing social and economic systems, as well as in existing political structures. International IDEA is committed to providing comparative information and research on how to overcome these obstacles and to advance gender and democracy issues in general, and to promote the participation and representation of women in political life in particular.

    WEDO is an international organisation that advocates for women’s equality in global policy. WEDO accomplishes its work through four program areas, economic & social justice, gender & governance, sustainable development, and US global policy.  
  • WOCAN - Women organisaing for change in Agriculture & NRM
    WOCAN is a women-led global network of professional women and men engaged in agriculture and natural resource management (NRM) who are committed to organisational change for gender equality and environmentally sustainable development.
