Why join ILC?

If you share the vision and mission of the ILC, then your organisation’s participation is essential to the Coalition’s success. The ILC is “member-led and member-driven”, with members deciding on the overall direction and governance as well as on its activities.

In addition to being involved in activities in the areas of policy dialogue and advocacy, as well as knowledge management and capacity-building, ILC members have consistently cited the exchange of information on land issues as one of the important benefits of participation in the Coalition.

Rights and Benefits

Through electronic communication and every two years at the Assembly of Members, members discuss and debate their issues of concern, exchange ideas, and develop collaborative initiatives. At these Assemblies, all members can nominate and vote for representatives on the Coalition Council and vote upon governance issues of the Coalition. In addition, all members are entitled to:

  • transparent access to information on all ILC activities, including funding that may be available through ILC;
  • invitations to attend the Assembly of Members;
  • timely notification regarding calls for nomination by the membership committee;
  • facilitation of member-to-member relations in support of the exchange of knowledge, joint actions and relationship building;
  • access to all documentation and information collected and maintained by ILC, subject to legal requirements regarding confidentiality;
  • ILC communications, newsletters and publications; and,
  • information on forthcoming trainings, workshops, seminars, events, and opportunities known to ILC.

Responsibilities of Membership

A broad and diverse membership encompassing both civil-society and inter-governmental
organisations committed to a pro-poor land agenda is one of the defining characteristics of ILC. The voluntary contribution by members of their expertise, time, and other resources to achieve the collective objectives agreed upon by all members of the ILC is essential.

Member organisations are expected to:

  • strive to make an annual financial or in-kind contribution to achieve ILC objectives;
  • collaborate actively with other ILC members to strengthen the capacity and expand the shared knowledge in order to help accomplish the mission of ILC;
  • strive to incorporate into their organisations, the successful results and lessons learned from initiatives jointly undertaken through ILC;
  • identify its membership in ILC in appropriate ways, such as through its website and in its publications;
  • provide continuity in its leadership and relationship with ILC, including by appointing primary and alternate representatives who have senior positions in the organisation and the authority to act and make decisions on behalf of their organisation;
  • meet the costs associated with their participation as a member. ILC recognizes that the financial capacity to participate varies within and between members. Accordingly, while encouraging members to seek to cover their costs, ILC will endeavour to provide support to members in such a manner as to not limit the capacity of their organisations to participate and serve the Coalition.

Membership contributions

As per the ILC Membership Contribution Policy approved by the 2009 Assembly of Members, each member is expected to make an annual membership contribution, in cash or in kind, beginning in 2010. Membership contributions are intended as an important means for ILC members to express a sense of ownership and commitment to the Coalition, and to contribute to the financial sustainability of the Coalition. The contributions accrued will be used to establish a membership fund to be managed on the basis of the Coalition Council’s directives. Minimum contributions vary according to an organisation’s profile.
