The ILC is “member-led and member-driven”, with members deciding on the overall direction and governance as well as on its activities.
In addition to being involved in activities in the areas of policy dialogue and advocacy, as well as knowledge management and capacity-building, ILC members have consistently cited the exchange of information on land issues as one of the important benefits of participation in the Coalition.
Rights and Benefits
Through electronic communication and every two years at the Assembly of Members, members
discuss and debate their issues of concern, exchange ideas, and develop collaborative initiatives. At these Assemblies, all members can nominate and vote for representatives on the Coalition Council and vote upon governance issues of the Coalition. In addition, all members are entitled to:
− transparent access to information on all Land Coalition activities, including funding that may be available through Land Coalition;
− invitations to attend the Assembly of Members;
− timely notification regarding calls for nomination by the membership committee;
− facilitation of member-to-member relations in support of the exchange of knowledge, joint
actions and relationship building;
− access to all documentation and information collected and maintained by the Land Coalition;
subject to legal requirements regarding confidentiality;
− the Land Coalition newsletter and any other regular communications and publications; and,
Information on forthcoming training, workshops, seminar and conference events and
opportunities known to the Land Coalition.
Responsibilities of Membership
A broad and diverse membership encompassing both civil-society and inter-governmental
organisations committed to a pro-poor land agenda is one of the defining characteristics of the ILC. The voluntary contribution by members of their expertise, time, and other resources to achieve the collective objectives agreed upon by all members of the ILC is essential.
Member organizations are expected to:
− strive to make an annual financial or in-kind contribution to achieving the objectives of the
Land Coalition;
− collaborate actively with other Land Coalition members to strengthen the capacity and
expand the shared knowledge in order to help accomplish the mission of the Land Coalition;
− strive to incorporate into their organisations, the successful results and lessons learned from
initiatives jointly undertaken through the Land Coalition;
− identify its membership in the Land Coalition in appropriate ways, such as through its
website and in its publications;
− provide continuity in its leadership and relationship with the Land Coalition, including by
appointing a first and alternate representative who have senior positions in the organisation
and the authority to act and make decisions on behalf of their organisation;
− meet the costs associated to their participation as a member. The Land Coalition recognizes
that the financial capacity to participate varies within and between members. Accordingly, the
Land Coalition while encouraging them to seek to cover their costs, will endeavour to
provide support to members in such a manner as to not limit the capacity of their
organizations to participate and serve the Coalition.
Membership contributions
Despite the different financial capacity of ILC members, contributing in cash or kind to the costs associated with the Coalition’s activities has always been a principle of ILC’s way of working. In order to have a systematic approach, at the 2009 Assembly in Nepal, members will discuss introducing mandatory membership contributions. The Coalition Council stated in its last meeting in December 2008 that it does not consider membership contributions part of an ILC resource mobilisation strategy, but rather, as a means for members to express a sense of ownership and commitment to the Coalition.
