The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the common sense. We are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 185 member countries—the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).

The World Bank’s projects and operations are designed to support low-income and middle-income countries’ poverty reduction strategies. The World Bank addresses the six strategic themes for global development that in its view are:
The Poorest Countries: World Bank is helping overcome poverty and spur sustainable growth in the poorest countries, especially in Africa.
Post-conflict and Fragile States: the World Bank is addressing the special challenges of countries that are emerging from conflict or seeking to avoid the breakdown of the state.
Middle-income Countries: the Bank is building a competitive menu of development solutions for middle-income countries, with customized services as well as finance.
Global Public Goods: the Bank is playing a more active role in regional and global issues that cross national borders, including climate change, infectious diseases, and trade.
The Arab World where the Bank is working with partners to strengthen development and opportunity in the Arab world.
Knowledge and Learning: the Bank is a learning organization, which increasingly leverages the best global knowledge to support development.
Those six strategies translate into World Bank designing projects in agriculture, education, environment, poverty, gender, health, law& justice and many more.
