Description:

IFAD is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It was establish in 1977 with it headquarters in Rome with the with a mandate to combat rural hunger and poverty in development countries. The Fund's target groups are the poorest of the world's people.

In fulfilling this objective the Fund provides loans to Developing Member States on highly concessional, intermediate and ordinary terms for approved projects and programmes, primarily for projects and programmes specifically designed to introduce, expand or improve food production systems and to strengthen related policies and institutions within the framework of national priorities and strategies.

Aims and objectives:

IFAD's mission statement is "Enabling the rural poor to overcome poverty".

IFAD has focuses exclusively on rural poverty reduction, working with poor rural populations in developing countries to eliminate poverty, hunger and malnutrition; raise productivity and incomes; and improve the quality of their lives.

Programmes and Activities

IFADs projects in 115 countries and territories, fall into the following categories:

  • agricultural development
  • financial services
  • rural infrastructure
  • livestock
  • fisheries
  • capacity-and institution-building
  • storage/food-processing/marketing
  • research/extension/training
  • small and medium scale enterprise development
Target Groups

Small farmers, artisanal fishermen, rural poor women, landless workers, rural artisans, nomadic herdsmen and indigenous populations, and across groups, women.

Focus:

To increase food production, raise incomes, improve health, nutrition, education standards and general well-being on a sustainable basis.
