| Description: |
MODE was established in 1995 as a non-political, civil-society organization, by a team of experienced, multi-disciplinary professionals and social volunteers dedicated to a vision of sustainable development for Nepal. Its target groups are primarily landless farmers, tribal groups and rural women. With only a few civil-society organizations involved in land issues in the country, MODE plays a crucial role in helping to build up the network of civil-society organizations committed to furthering agrarian reform and rural development. |

| Aims and Objectives: |
MODE believes in a holistic and participatory-process approach to foster the growth and development of grassroots-level people and their communities. Using an integrated collaborative process approach for community resource management, MODE undertakes a variety of activities in health and sanitation, infrastructure development, research and training, literacy and non-formal education programmes, and sustainable agriculture. It also seeks to institutionalize a participatory approach to ensure that there is bottom-up micro planning for community development. |
| MODE's Programmes and Activities: |
Knowledge building and awareness raising on leasehold forestry. The poor in the hills of Nepal are among the poorest, being faced with a continuous reduction in land holding size, severe degradation of forests and low livestock productivity. MODE has sought to heighten the awareness of government and other sectors on the critical situation in the hills. It has undertaken a 'strengths and weakness' analysis of the government's leasehold forestry programme as a sustainable means to distribute land and guarantee secure livelihoods for the rural poor. It has likewise carried out research and documentation of grassroots knowledge on leasehold forestry, which has informed its policy work with the Nepalese government.
Cooperation with government on leasehold forestry. MODE is also assisting the Nepalese government to identify the beneficiaries of forestry programmes.
Networking and building strong community links with farmers. MODE undertakes a major activity in networking between farmers in different contexts so that collectively they know and understand all aspects of the leasehold programme. The farmers can then learn better ways to address the legal and bureaucratic constraints to improving their land access, land management and livelihoods. |
