RMI - The Indonesian Institute for Forest and Environment - is an independent and non-profit organization that works on environmental issues, particularly related to natural resources management. RMI is legally constituted as foundation by Notary Public Ms. Muljani Sjafei, SH on September 18, 1992 in Bogor, West Java. To understand and properly respond to the dynamics of current environmental and social problems, RMI's vision is manifested the people's, (women and men), sovereignty over land and other natural resources, together with an equitable, democratic and sustainable management system. In achieving this vision, two RMI has two objectives:
- To empower people to strengthen their bargaining position on land and other natural resources, as well as an equitable, democratic and sustainable management system;
- To enhance the consciousness and concern and to change the thinking and behavior patterns of decision makers and members of societies to respect people's rights on natural resources.
Based on above vision and two objectives, RMI concentrates its programs on the community-based forest resources management system with gender perspective through activities such as education, organizing, research and media campaigns. These activities are spelled out into programs below:
- Strengthening customary and local institutions and community-based natural resources management system in Halimun ecosystem area.
This program has been carried out since the end of 1997. The first stage of RMI's work (the end of 1997 - 2000) was mainly focused on the participatory feasibility study and building a foundation of relationship, trust, and partnership with local communities (Malasari and Curug Bitung Villages ) and Indigenous People (Kasepuhan Sirnaresmi in Sirnaresmi Village). Learning from the first stage, RMI was further developed the second stage (2000-2004) to secure the sustainable livelihoods of the communities (Malasari, Mekarsari and Kiarasari Villages as well as Kasepuhan Citorek) which based on their surrounding forest resources of the area. In the context of women peasant empowerment which started with women peasant workshops on land tenurial issues at Malasari and Nyungcung Hamlets, Malasari Village, which cooperated with KPA Konsorsium Pembaharuan Agraria and ILC (International Land Coalition), RMI learnt on how to organize women peasants. At Nyungcung Hamlet, Malasari Village, women peasants are organized through groups to restore land. Meanwhile at some hamlets at Mekarsari Village, women peasants are organized through women's schools (known as sekolah perempuan ).
- Development of alternative education models for women and men, in rural (Halimun ecosystem area in particular) and urban area (Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi).
In terms of urban people, the program is designed to gain public support in order to call for government's and other parties' recognition on people's rights and their community-based natural resources management system.
Development of RMI's policies, management and resources toward self-reliant (mandiri). Under this program, in order to achieve self support condition, there are three activities below:
- Developing Library as one of information center for public.
- Developing further some appropriate learning media in Kampung PENDING (environmental education center) in Bojong Menteng Hamlet, Cimande Hilir Village, Caringin Sub-district;
- Setting up the cooperative institution (koperasi)
