The Importance of Rural Land Access in Addressing Water, Urban Poverty and Sustainable Development

ENB Official coverage with highlights and photos

There is mounting concern that despite the repeated commitments by governments to improve the access to land by the rural poor, only sporadic efforts have been made to monitor the level and nature of actual results.

The Land Reporting Initiative (LRI) will be a global effort to develop and implement a system of agreed standards and related indicators for monitoring legal frameworks, policies and practices on access to land. LRI will aim to systematically engage all stakeholders, in particular governments, along with country-level representatives of civil-society, academia/researchers plus multilateral and bilateral organizations operating within countries.

The LRI will promote standards that will:

  1. assist governments to set results-based strategies and,

  2. promote compliance by countries that are falling short in meeting international agreements.

The International Land Coalition is a global alliance of intergovernmental, governmental and civil society organizations including IFAD, FAO, WFP, the European Commission, IFPRI, the World Bank, Interamerican Development Bank and civil-society organizations in over 40 countries.
