Praia +9

Nine years ago, a wide range of actors from Sahelian countries, including government, peasant associations, researchers and NGOs, met in Praia at a regional conference organized by the CILSS and the Club du Sahel. The conference produced policy recommendations on land tenure and decentralization, and called for for laws and policies based on equity and social justice.  

In order to review the achievements and identify new challenges concerning land tenure in the region, CILSS convened a regional forum – 'Praia+9' which was held in Bamako on 17-21 November 2003. This brough together governments, intergovernmental organizations, private sector, development agencies, research institutions, peasant associations and other civil-society organizations. In addition to working in plenary, there were fivde tehmatic workshops organized where discussions took place on broad policy trends and field-level experiences concerning land tenure in West Africa.

The Forum's aim was to develop new policy orientations for equitable and secure access to natural resources and for sustainable natural resource management. These were submitted to the Heads of State and Government of the CILSS.
