Sustainable Development Means Working Together

The History of sustainable development policies has shown that government-led development, without the active support of civil society and civil-society movements and the enabling support of governments, has failed. The record of official development assistance confirms that the active participation by communities in the planning and implementation of development policies and programmes is an essential prerequisite to sustainable human development.

It is evident that strong alliances between governments and civil-society organizations (CSOs) are pivotal to sustainable development, especially if coupled with the moral and financial persuasion of the international community. The synergistic effect of merging the interests of civil society, intergovernmental organizations and governments, creates innovative ways to address the problems of the poor.

This was the aim of a two-year-long consultative process of stakeholders at local, national, regional and global levels and resulted in a document entitled 'Towards a Common Platform on Access to Land', launched at the WSSD in 2002 and widely endorsed as a dynamic tool for strengthening global consensus on land issues. It is a living document and will be reissued on a regular basis, in order to reflect the evolving experience, lessons, progress and expanding collaborative work being undertaken to foster improved land rights for the rural poor.

Towards a Common Platform on Access to Land, provides advice and practical approaches on how to facilitate alliances among sectors, assist governments in formulating land policies, strengthen rural people's organizations and work in partnership with civil-society and international organizations.
