The International Land Coalition currently has the following activities on the topic of women’s access to land:
Securing women's Access to Land : Linking Research and Action
  • The debate on women's land rights has reached a critical point, at which there is sufficient understanding of the need for improving women's access to and control over land, but obstacles and challenges persist in practise due to their roots in the gendered power relations governing society. This programme seeks to respond to this reality through a research project in Eastern and Southern Africa to link research and advocacy to promote a transformative agenda of improving women’s access to and rights over land and other resources. The project is expected to result in an enhanced understanding of the power structures that continue to hamper women’s enjoyment of secure access to land and other natural resources.
  • Nairobi Inception workshop
The first workshop with participants from 8 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa took place in Nairobi,
19-23 May. More than 30 participants spent a week finding out more about the small grants programme to be carried out by MISR and PLAAS, presenting their ideas for action-oriented research and receiving feedback from their peers, and learning about gender sensitive methodologies, action research and proposal wirting, amongst other things.

  • Women’s access to land and other natural resources is directly related to rural development, especially in agriculture. It is a basic factor in food security for families and communities. Respect for women’s land rights thus benefits the population as a whole.
