New CD on Common Property

DGROUP

Background
The Dgroup on Indigenous Peoples, Pastoralists, and Securing the Commons builds on the work and ideas of previous ILC e-discussions and workshops on pastoralism. The Dgroup has been established to develop an ILC strategy on pastoralism and to determine how ILC can best enhance land tenure rights, as well as support knowledge sharing and advocacy.

Objectives and Goals
ILC facilitates networking amongst organizations with similar mandates. It also shares knowledge, supports research, and promotes advocacy on pastoral issues. The Dgroup will be a vehicle for continued dialogue amongst stakeholders and the discussion themes will help ILC develop a strategy and annual work plans on pastoralist issues.
When the Dgroup is launched, we would like to get your feedback on ILC's new thematic webpage on Indigenous Peoples and Pastoralists. Specifically, does the site meet your needs and what other information or services would you like to see ILC offer?
In the longer term, the Dgroup will focus on developing ILC's work on securing pastoral land rights. The discussions should identify key land issues pastoralists face and should culminate in developing key points for collaboration by ILC members and partners.
Some issues that are likely to be discussed include: how to increase awareness amongst pastoralist groups about innovative policy frameworks or legislation that protect their interests, how to increase pastoralists' advocacy skills, and how to develop a best-practices manual for defending land rights. The overall goal of the Dgroup is to understand the issues facing pastoral land rights today discuss and share case studies and regional reports that address approaches to securing access or tenure, and develop a scope of work for ILC, which will inform ILC's annual work plans and priorities in developing funding proposals for collaborative work.

About Dgroups
Dgroups is an on-line discussion platform that helps facilitate discussion amongst a wide range of stakeholders. Dgroups is a simple way to stimulate discussions, generate ideas, share knowledge, and offer feedback.

The likely participants to a Dgroup will be interested stakeholders working on the sustainability of pastoralism from a land rights-based point of view. The Pastoralist Dgroup will be a private discussion amongst invited participants who represent civil society organisations, ILC members and partners, international governmental organisations, professionals, researchers, policy makers, and governments.

Moderator
The discussion will be moderated by the ILC Secretariat. Messages from participants will not be automatically posted, but instead will be categorized and posted by the moderator. As the discussion begins, different threads and interests will emerge - the moderator will introduce the various topics presented and generate comments and questions to further engage participants.

Creating an Account
A date has not yet been set for the formation of a Dgroup addressing  indigenous peoples, pastoralists,
and the commons.  ILC will send an email announcement to its membership once it plans to begin the discussion group.  In the meantime, if you would like to provide ILC with feedback on the content of its thematic pages on Indigenous Peoples or on Securing the Commons, please contact Valerie Stori at v.stori@landcoalition.org .
