Last month, the Global Witness released their 2018 report on land and environment defenders. Sadly, 14 land defenders were killed in Africa in 2018 and several others criminalised for defending their land and our environment.

A tool to secure tenure for all in Francophone Africa

Across French speaking Africa, communities are battling governments and companies to preserve their historical rights to land. An inclusive land tool developed by the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) is helping communities determine borders and protect their rights.
An innovation born from the recent presidential elections in Senegal is its public exchange of ideas on land between presidential candidates and voters.
Uganda Land Matrix National Land Observatory launched

Uganda has a new combat gear – and it’s not going to be used to tear down homes and destroy lives. Instead it will arm the country with a platform to fight for land rights, peace and justice, and comes in the form of the latest Land Matrix-supported National Land Observatory (NLO)
In January this year, the African Union renewed its commitment to end hunger by 2025. In recent years, efforts to reverse hunger in Africa have multiplied, but as the UN State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2017 shows, real progress is yet to follow. Globally, 767 million people live in extreme poverty, half of them in sub-Saharan Africa. Across the continent, it is popular opinion that the African nations need to go beyond windy promises.
