Identity and collective land management for the territorial defence of Tola Chica

By reclaiming their land, the inhabitants of Tola Chica challenged private land ownership, which was the type of tenure the State promoted. Co-proprietors faced various threats which could endanger their territory, from land traffickers to a group from the community which has been influenced by the Catholic Church. Despite these conflicts, the community of Tola Chica maintained its unity and collective land management. It currently promotes activities with cultural factors as central elements, in order to prevent internal tensions arising again in territorial disputes.
