Semiáridos Platform launches in the Lara region of Venezuela

The Semiáridos Platform was launched in the Lara region of Venezuela within the framework of a conference on desertification organized by the Venezuelan Observatory of Land. It is a space for articulation of international institutions and public, private and academic organizations, in order to face the challenges presented by the Lara semi-arid region.

On June 16th a conference was held in the city of Barquisimeto (Lara Estate, Venezuela) on the situation, development prospects and opportunities in the Lara semi-arid region. It coincided with the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought and was organized within the framework of the process of desertification taking place at the global level.

The event was coordinated by the Observatory of Land, Environment and Rural Poverty -Observatorio Venezolano de Tierras, Ambiente y Pobreza Rural or OVT-  and promoted by ILC member Acción Campesina.  It was attended by over 70 participants including, among others, national and international speakers, and representation of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the University Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado (UCLA) and the National Agricultural Research Institute of Venezuela (INIA).

The Semiáridos Platform in the Lara region, is a local initiative seeking to articulate diverse actors to promote development processes in the region, was launched during the conference. Actors to participate are, among others, international institutions such as IICA, civil society organizations and academic institutions. The initiative belongs to the Latin America Semiáridos Platform and it is promoted by OVT in Venezuela.

The Latin America Semiáridos​ Platform is an initiative promoted by ILC LAC and seeks to address the problems of the regional semi-arid areas linked to access to and management of land, water and other natural resources. It strengthens and mobilizes civil society, with the aim of generating optimal conditions for political advocacy processes.
