5. Derechos territoriales seguros para los pueblos indígenas
Respetar y proteger los derechos inherentes a la tierra y a los territorios de los pueblos indígenas, al tenor de los establecido en la Convención 169 de la OIT y la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas, incluyendo mediante el reconocimiento de que el respeto al conocimiento y a las culturas indígenas contribuye al desarrollo sostenible y equitativo y a la gestión adecuada del medio ambiente.

Advancing the recognition of Indigenous People’s land rights through evidence-based advocacy

- Contributing to a region-wide monitoring and documentation efforts on the current state of Indigenous Peoples’ lands
- Campaigning and advocating in Thailand and Myanmar for the passage of laws recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ customary lands
Land and Territorial Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants
- Documenting land, territory and natural resource rights violations faced by Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants
- Promoting the inspection and legal safeguards of land, territories and natural resources belonging to Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants
- Impacting national and regional contexts in order to ensure the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants are respected
ILC Action Plan for Indigenous Peoples Land Rights in Africa
- Strengthening capacity of Indigenous Peoples' organisations and networks within and outside of ILC to advocate for the rights of their constituents and actively engage in national and regional land-related processes (Connect)
- Documenting best practices, human interest stories and lessons learnt for knowledge management, and influencing policy and practice for securing Indigenous Peoples' land rights (Mobilise)
- Promoting dialogue with and influencing key decision makers at the national, regional and global level for implementation of pro-poor land policies and reforms that reflect Indigenous Peoples' rights (Influence)
Global Policy
Since 2013, ILC has made a concerted effort to explore how to best contribute to the efforts of Indigenous Peoples to secure their lands and territorial rights. Following the participatory development of an a specific approach to indigenous peoples’ issues, ILC works at national, regional and global levels to advance the recognition of their land rights, protect indigenous land defenders, monitoring pressures over indigenous territories, and enhance knowledge and capacity building on Indigenous Peoples’ rights to lands, territories and resources.
ILC participates in the Inter-Agency Support Group (IASG) of the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and is committed to the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the implementation of the Outcome Document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP), particularly in the definition of indicators, the development of a System Wide Action Plan, and the coordination and cooperation of actions at national level.
