Losing one's life to defend the land

Final report of the international mission
Conducted in Guatemala, August 2018

Between August 6 and 10 of 2018, an international mission to Guatemala was carried out by members of the International Land Coalition (ILC), the World Alliance for Citizen Participation (Civicus), Frontline Defenders and a reporter from the British newspaper The Guardian. In addition, the National Land Pastoral of the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala and the Unit for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in Guatemala (Udefegua) accompanied the mission. It is important to point out that the organizations and alliances of this delegation have worked for many years with peasant and indigenous peoples' organizations, as well as with human rights organizations, agencies of the United Nations system and government offices in Guatemala.

The mission was carried out at the request of the members and allies of the ILC in Guatemala in the context of the worsening insecurity conditions (criminalization, defamation, arbitrary detentions and murders) that these organizations face for exercising and defending rights. Of special relevance and gravity was the murder of eight land rights defenders belonging to Codeca and CCDA.

This document contains the conclusions and the presentation of recommendations from the international mission.
