PASTORALISTS

I am an indigenous Maasai woman from a remote community in Northern Tanzania near the Serengeti.

This background has led me to two of the defining passions of my professional life – defending the land rights of marginalized indigenous communities and building the capacity of indigenous women to claim their rights. For the last year, I have been the Executive Director of Ujamaa Community Resource Team, an environmental and social justice organisation empowering marginalised indigenous groups in Northern Tanzania. It is renowned for its pioneering successes helping indigenous communities secure rights to their land and natural resources. I have worked with UCRT for the past 10 years under different capacities. I have played a key role in ensuring UCRT remain an active member of ILC by representing East Africa on its Global Council.
