What we do
The Land Matrix is promoting transparency & accountability in decisions over large-scale land acquisitions, by capturing and sharing data about these deals on its online open access platform. Since 2012, the Land Matrix has captured 1,785 concluded deals, covering over 50 million hectares of land.
Having systematically collected and verified data on large scale land acquisitions since 2012, the Land Matrix database is regarded as one of the most comprehensive data collections of its kind. The interactive database, together with other data visualisation tools, provides a wealth of detailed information about Large scale land acquisitions at global, regional, and national level in more than 85 countries. While the Global Observatory illustrates the magnitude of the phenomenon of LSLAs worldwide, the four Regional Focal Points (RFPs) – in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America – assist with data collection, research, advocacy, networking, and communication in their respective regions.
The RFPs also help establish and run the National Land Observatories (NLOs), currently active in Argentina, Cameroon, Philippines, Senegal, and Uganda. The NLOs initiate decentralised activities at country level and strive for more inclusive participation of local partners in collecting, managing, and reviewing land data. The Land Matrix is designed to facilitate wide participation in collecting, correcting, improving, and sharing information about these deals, thus supporting greater public involvement in critical decisions that affect the lives of land-users.
