Defending land rights safeguards our freedoms
Only 3.1% of the world lives in countries where speaking out, organising, and protesting is not only possible, but encouraged according to Civicus.
More alarming still, while civic spaces are shrinking year-on-year across the globe, land rights defenders face increasing marginalisation and life-threatening prosecution.
In 2023, our data indicates that more than 1,500 land rights defenders suffered non-lethal attacks in two countries alone.
This crisis shapes the daily reality of many of ILC’s almost 300 members in 83 countries, and gives urgency to our collective work for people-centred land governance. Never has our commitment to shift power and leadership into the hands of the people’s organisations in our network been more important, which is why the revised ILC Charter formally establishes their leadership at all levels of ILC’s governance and work.
