What we do
LANDex is a global land index that puts people at the centre of land data, democratising land monitoring and building a data ecosystem where all voices can be heard. Built in consultation with members and strategic partners of ILC Based on common indicators and methodologies, LANDex gives priority to people-centred data, giving a platform to the individuals and communities often absent in official numbers.
The concept behind the tool arose in 2016, in discussions on the importance of land monitoring by civil society and the need to overcome fragmentation in existing initiatives. Over the course of the next two years – through eight global and regional consultations – a long list of monitoring initiatives and indicators was narrowed down to the 33 core indicators that now form part of LANDex. For each of the ILC’s 10 Commitments, they measure the strength of the legal framework, levels of implementation, and the results or impact of this. LANDex results have been mobilised in national policy debate, used to create country profiles, briefs on specific topics and in-depth analysis.
The tool can also be used to monitor progress towards global development frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure (VGGTs). In 2018, LANDex was piloted in Colombia, Nepal and Senegal and in 2019, coverage will expand to Peru, Chile, Mongolia, Bangladesh and South Africa.
By 2021, the LANDex baseline data is expected to be available for all ILC countries.
