What we do
Filling the data gap by giving power back to the people.
The 250+ members of the International Land Coalition (ILC) share one goal: bringing about people-centred land governance. This means putting those who live on and from the land at the centre of decision-making. Too often, they are excluded from decisions about their land by those in power.
Put in the hands of land-users and citizens, data can be a powerful tool that has the potential of shifting those power imbalances. Across the globe, ILC members are collecting and managing ‘people-centred’ data, according to their own priorities.
By doing so, they are able to show the complex realities of land governance on the ground, provide information they need to advocate for their rights, while holding governments accountable to the promises they make
With over 800 organisations coming together in over 60 national and thematic platforms, ILC supports these initiatives by providing tools and trainings to generate and use people-centred data. These initiatives are participatory, consultative and respond to the data demands of members.

THE POWER OF PEOPLE-CENTRED DATA
"AT SOME POINT THE GOVERNMENT COULD NO LONGER DENY THE DATA WE COLLECT ON THE GROUND BECAUSE IT WAS DONE IN A PARTICIPATORY WAY"

What we do
A global database of violations
At least 331 human rights defenders were killed in 2020. 69% were working on land, indigenous peoples and environmental rights.
-(Front Line Defenders)
Today, there is a systematic lack of regular, accessible and disaggregated data documenting the threats and attacks perpetrated against land and environmental defenders. Collecting data beyond killings is important in order to analyse patterns of violence, identify at-risk areas and provide support to targeted individuals, groups and organisations.
The LED Data Working Group, an outgrowth of the Defend the Defenders Coalition, has formed with the ambitious goal of creating a global, integrated database of LED data beyond killings. Stay tuned for updates.
