Land Rights in Uganda
Uganda has witnessed a resurgence of debates and conflicts over land rights, driven by factors such as population growth, urbanization, commercial agriculture, and large-scale land acquisitions by foreign investors. These dynamics have aggravated tensions between customary land tenure systems and statutory land laws, leading to disputes, displacement, and social unrest.
Efforts to address these challenges have included the enactment of the National Land Policy of 2013, which aims to rectify historical injustices, protect vulnerable groups, and regulate land use amid increasing demand for investment. The National Land Use Policy of 2006 provides a framework for sustainable land management, while the National Urban Policy of 2017 addresses urbanization challenges, including land tenure security in rapidly growing urban areas.
