LAND RIGHTS IN SENEGAL
Historically, land tenure systems have been complex, with various customary, colonial, and statutory laws governing land ownership and usage.
A significant portion of land in Senegal is communally owned, with customary authorities overseeing its allocation and management. However, challenges such as unclear land tenure arrangements, overlapping claims, and land grabbing persist, particularly in rural areas.
Women and marginalized groups often face discrimination in accessing and owning land, despite legal reforms aimed at promoting gender equality. Customary practices and societal norms sometimes limit women's rights to inherit or control land.
In recent years, efforts have been made to address these challenges. Civil society organizations, including the National Land Coalition (NLC) Senegal, continue to play a crucial role in advocating for inclusive land rights and supporting communities in asserting their land rights.
