LAND RIGHTS IN KOSOVO
Kosovo has an area of 10,908km² characterized by a large forest area covering almost half of its territory with a population of around 1.9 million. Forests are one of the most important natural resources of Kosovo covering about 44.7% of the country’s territory. Having a multy-dimensional function -- economic, social and environmental -- forests play a critical role in the sustainable economic development of Kosovo with a considerable impact on livelihood improvement especially in the rural and mountain areas.
Understanding the importance of protecting biodiversity and sustainable forests to climate resilience and ecosystem preservation, a major focus of the The National Engagement Strategy in Kosovo has been to advocate for the recognition of local customary land right systems, thereby reinforcing local communities' economic security, and contributing to sustainable local food systems.
