Land rights at CBD COP17
WE HAVE A MISSION, WILL YOU HELP US?
Only 7% of countries’ national biodiversity reports measured the land rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. And just one country, Kenya, reported in full.
That’s a big gap. Small farmers, pastoralists, Indigenous Peoples and local communities look after much of the world’s nature, yet many have no secure rights to their land. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework will not succeed unless they do, and if their rights aren’t counted, they are easy to leave out of national plans.
At CBD COP17 in Yerevan, we are calling on countries to:
- report on community land rights in their next national reports
- strengthen the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities across the framework
- count women’s land rights, with land data broken down by sex
Our mission: make sure the people who care for the land are counted, and protected.
