Family Farming

Strong small-scale and family farming systems are vital to global food security. Yet many family farmers and small-scale producers live in, or on the edge of, poverty. Land rights can be the key to securing better livelihoods for them and their families, and keeping their knowledge and custodianship of the land at the heart of our food systems, for the health of humanity and the planet.

Farmers with less than 2Ha of land still produce more than 30% of the world’s food.

Despite this, many family farmers and small-scale producers live in or on the edge of poverty. This is in part due to histories of unequal land distribution, little public investment, and a food system that favours corporate controlled agriculture.

Around the globe family farmers are living with insecure and uncertain forms of tenure, slowly being squeezed out of their land. This in turn is undermining their ability to contribute to sustainable and local food systems.

Family farmers and small-scale producers must be given their rightful place in feeding the world of the future.

Securing their access to and control over land, and other natural resources is a fundamental element to ensure this happens.

With cultural and historical connections to their lands, they hold the solutions to transforming our food system and fighting the climate crisis. They employ agroecological practices that research has proven to increase soil carbon stocks. Such sustainable practices sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s time to end 'farming without farmers' and keep private equity firms out of our food systems.

Dig into their stories to understand how strong family farming systems is transforming lives.

"After we got our land rights, we could toil on our farm and plant chilies, cloves and nutmeg. Our yields made it possible for me to open a small shop, educate my children and to host social gatherings"- Anci Tatawi
