FAMILY FARMING

Did you know?

Family farms occupy around 70-80 percent of farmland and produce more than 80 percent of the world's food.

At ILC we jointly commit to...

Ensure equitable land distribution and public investment that supports small-scale farming systems, including through redistributive agrarian reforms that counter excessive land concentration, provide for secure and equitable use and control of land, and allocate appropriate land to landless rural producers and urban residents, whilst supporting smallholders as investors and producers, such as through cooperative and partnership business models.

Strong Small-Scale Farming Systems

(c) Jason Taylor/the Source Project

It's time to advocate for the land rights of family farmers!

Despite producing the majority of the world's food, many family farmers and small-scale producers live in poverty.

Unequal land redistribution, little investment and recognition of their importance means that family farmers occupy only small proportions of agricultural land in most countries, frequently under insecure and uncertain forms of tenure.

That is why when crises hit and family farmers' livelihoods are put in peril, they count on us to fight alongside them for their rights as part of the implementation of the UN Decade of Family Farming(2019-2028)

The United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) is a historical recognition of the contribution family farmers make in feeding the world, and ILC members have been an integral part of making this happen.

Family farmers and small-scale producers must be given their rightful place in feeding the world of the future.

Securing their access to and control over land, and other natural resources is a fundamental element to ensure this happens.

With our help, land rights can become the center of public policy discussions around family farming, ensuring equitable land distribution and greater public investment.
