Putting people at the center of data
The nearly 300 members of the International Land Coalition share one goal: bringing about people-centred land governance. This means putting those who live on and from the land at the centre of decision-making.
Too often, they are excluded from decisions about their land by those in power.
That is why ILC members across the globe are collecting and managing ‘people-centred’ or citizen-led data, according to their own priorities to shift power imbalances that have historically marginalised and excluded them.
ILC members are showing the complex realities of land governance on the ground, providing information they need to advocate for their rights while holding governments accountable for the promises they make.
At ILC, people-centred data is helping us:

READ THE REPORTTRACKING PROGRESS TOWARDS GLOBAL COMMITMENTS
SDGs, CEDAW, VGGTs and the Rio Conventions
Land has a central role in a number of global frameworks and commitments, including specific land-related indicators in the SDGs, within a General Comment issued by CEDAW, and throughout the VGGTs. More recently, land has been recognized as key to achieving goals outlined in UNCCD and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) of the CBD. Are governments on track to deliver? Dive into our progress reports to see how people's data is being used to monitor how governments are making good – or not – on their commitments.

Uncovering the Hidden Iceberg
The Hidden Iceberg series tracks non-lethal attacks against Indigenous, Land and Environmental Defenders recognising that the killing of a defender is only the tip of a much deeper, hidden iceberg. In 2021, in Colombia alone, nearly 1,300 non-lethal attacks were documented – that is nearly 40 (non-lethal) attacks for every defender that was killed. Dig further into the Hidden Iceberg series to learn more about ALLIED data work.
READ THE REPORTALLIED
The Data Working Group within ALLIED is a group of national, regional and global data collectors tracking attacks on Indigenous, Land and Environmental Defenders (ILEDs). We have come together to reduce fragmentation of data, to create a global consolidated database of attacks faced by these defenders, and to hold governments accountable through the Crucial Gap series.
