Global goals

Securing land rights is key to building a sustainable, just world where human rights are protected for all.
“The transformative potential of the land related indicators is that we can talk about land ... as having the potential to alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable development.”

-Dr. Peter Messerli, Director Wyss Academy for Nature at the University of Bern

no land rights, no SDGs.

Here are *some of* the facts:

Countries where women lack any right to own land have on average 60% more malnourished children. That means that eradicating poverty and hunger means securing land rights for women.

In the Brasilian Amazon the deforestation rate is 11 times lower on Indigenous Peoples' and Community Forests. In the Guatemalan Petén, it is 20 times lower, and in the Mexican Yucatan, it is 350 times lower. Land rights are inextricably tied to protecting the environment and fighting climate change.

If governments fail to secure and protect collective tenure rights, coupled with the growing competition on natural resources, it's likely that:

  1. Local communities will be evicted without compensation – undermining Goals 1, 2, 5, 10 as well as, indirectly, Goals 3 & 4.
  2. Indigenous Peoples forests will be bought, leased or grabbed by others and cleared – this will undermine Goals 13 and 15.
  3. Conflicts and human rights violations will increase, undermining Goals 16 and 8.

The Agenda 2030 clearly recognised that without progress on land rights, the SDGs will not be achieved. Because of this, all UN Member States agreed to include land as an important element in a number of the Targets set in the Agenda.

Every time we score a victory for land rights, SDGs win, too.

Progress on the 10 ILC Commitments will contribute to at least 59 SDGs targets that relate to People-Centred Land Governance.

Linkages with specific commitments are complex, which is why we've established a body to monitor the implementation of the land related targets of the SDGs (1.4, 2.3, 5.a, 15.3).

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Land Momentum Group brings together CSOs, donors, UN agencies that are actively working on land targets of the SDGs. Together, we work to influence voluntary national review process at the SDG High Level Political Forum to promote accountable, holistic and transparent reporting on all land related targets. We also assist and promote reporting by civil society organisations at national level broadening the scope of indicators and official data. At the same time, we support advocacy, lobbying and campaigning efforts at national, regional and international levels for effective monitoring of SDG land indicators .
