The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty will be crucial to achieving Sustainable Development Goals
Last week, we had a glimpse of light at the end of a very long tunnel, with the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
19.2.2025
The International Land Coalition warmly welcomes this initiative- a critical step forward towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2 on hunger and poverty - following the successful first Board of Champions meeting in Rome at IFAD. Brazil and Spain will take the charge as co-chairs of the Alliance; their leadership vital in ensuring that the approximately 733 million people worldwide experiencing hunger, have a fighting chance.
This staggering number is a grim reminder that the urgency to act has never been greater, and despite progress in some areas, increasing inequalities, the climate crisis and ongoing conflicts continue to exacerbate the challenges we already face.
That is why it is all the more important that the Alliance includes and addresses the needs of those most affected by hunger and poverty. And of course at the heart of this effort, we cannot stress enough the critical importance of securing land rights for sustainable and lasting results.
Since its creation 30 years ago, the International Land Coalition has been committed to the fight against hunger and poverty. Over time, our members have recognized that ensuring secure land rights for smallholder farmers, peasants, Indigenous peoples, and pastoralists is essential for building a more just, sustainable, and equitable world.
As the Global Alliance moves forward, we stand ready to support and collaborate in advancing this shared vision.
