Dear ILC Members,
As we end our mandate and hand over to the new Council from the beginning of 2025, we, the outgoing ILC Council, want to honour the many passionate and dedicated members who have worked with us towards our shared goal of people-centred land governance. Together we’ve helped secure over two million Ha of land for those that live on it.
Two years ago, we pledged to shift power to People’s Organisations, and today we are seeing the results of that effort. In fact, 39% of our council seats are now held by People’s Organisations — a major milestone for our Coalition. At the national level, People’s Organisations now have a leadership role in 23 out of 32 National Land Coalitions, a notable 19% increase since 2023, and a strong indicator of our commitment to grassroots-driven change.
Looking back, we are proud that our Council has brought together a powerful representation of Indigenous Peoples, pastoralists, women, youth, and smallholder farmers’ organisations. From advocating for stronger protections for Indigenous and local communities' lands to pushing for policies that ensure sustainable land use, every effort was aimed at ensuring the voices of those we represent were heard.
As we hand over the reins to the newly elected council, we have full confidence that the incoming leadership will continue to build on the work we’ve done. Change brings fresh ideas, new perspectives, and exciting opportunities. We are grateful to have been part of this journey.
As we transition to new leadership, we remain steadfast in our belief in the power of this coalition and are excited to continue supporting its mission from within the ranks. Thank you for your trust, and here’s to a brighter, more just, and inclusive future ahead.
With appreciation,
Doris Munyingi
