24 July 2026, Rome – The International Land Coalition (ILC) has officially joined the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, reaffirming a mission that has been at the heart of its work for more than three decades.
Launched under Brazil’s G20 Presidency in 2024, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty brings together governments, international organisations, civil society, research institutions, and philanthropic partners to accelerate coordinated action to end hunger and poverty worldwide.
Long before becoming the International Land Coalition, the organisation was founded in 1995 as the Popular Coalition to Eradicate Hunger and Poverty with a shared conviction: that secure land tenure is fundamental to ending hunger and poverty.
Today, as global hunger, inequality, and pressures on land continue to intensify, joining the Global Alliance represents both a renewed commitment and a reflection of ILC’s founding purpose.
Welcoming ILC to the Alliance, Renato Domith Godinho, Director of the Global Alliance Support Mechanism, said:
Through its Statement of Commitment, ILC will support Alliance members by mobilising its National Land Coalitions, multi-stakeholder platforms operating in more than 30 countries, to strengthen land governance, support inclusive policy dialogue, and share evidence and practical solutions across countries. The Coalition will also provide technical assistance, facilitate peer learning and South-South exchange, strengthen citizen-generated data on land inequality and tenure security, and promote greater policy coherence across land, agriculture, climate, and investment frameworks.
By joining the Global Alliance, ILC reinforces a simple but essential message: ending hunger and poverty requires addressing their structural causes. Secure land rights and people-centred land governance are not peripheral issues, they are fundamental to achieving food security, resilient livelihoods, and sustainable development for all.
