world leaders, grassroots movements, and governments unite for people-centred land governance
PRESS RELEASE
11 June, 2025 - Colombia will welcome 1,000 delegates from over 90 countries for the 2025 edition of the Global Land Forum (GLF), to be held from 14 to 19 June. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, the International Land Coalition (ILC), the European Union, and the Centro de Investigación y Educación Popular/Programa por la Paz (Cinep/PPP), this high-level event will bring together representatives from grassroots communities, activists, policymakers, international organisations, governments, donors and academia committed to advancing equitable access to land and transforming food systems.
Held for the first time in Colombia, the 10th GLF comes at a pivotal moment in the country’s pursuit of agrarian reform, climate justice and the transformation of agri-food systems. Through dialogue, learning exchanges and political engagement, the Forum aims to move forward land governance policies that are inclusive, sustainable, and rooted in people’s rights.
“This is a time of transformation, not just for Colombia but for land governance around the world,” said Marcy Vigoda, Director of the International Land Coalition. “In a moment when inequality, conflict and the climate crisis are putting immense pressure on people’s relationship with land, the GLF offers a rare opportunity for the land community to listen, learn and take collective action in support of the millions of people whose lives and livelihoods depend on their land rights. If we’re serious about building a just and sustainable world, it has to start with people and the relationship with their land.”
A key highlight will be Colombia’s co-hosting of the global observance of the United Nations’ Desertification and Drought Day on 17 June, under the theme, “Restore the Land. Unlock the Opportunities,” drawing global attention to the urgent need for land restoration in the face of climate change.
“The government of President Gustavo Petro has demonstrated its commitment to strengthen agri-food systems to make them fair, resilient and sustainable, a political decision aimed at protecting the land and the environment. And we have done it, hand to hand, with the communities, listening to their voices and respecting their traditions. The GLF is the first stop on a road that will take us to the II International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development +20- Cartagena 2026, thus consolidating Colombia as a world reference in the defense of the land and those who work it”, said Martha Carvajalino Villegas, minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia.
The Forum will serve as a dynamic space for learning, policy dialogue and transformative land and environmental planning. It will also deepen national dialogue in Colombia, aligning local realities with global goals for social justice and environmental sustainability.
Gilles Bertrand, Ambassador of the European Union in Colombia, emphasised, "Entering the new biodiversity economy offers Colombia a unique opportunity to intertwine nature conservation, peacebuilding, and sustainable economic development in its most remote regions. For more than two decades, the European Union and its Member States have supported Colombia’s efforts to achieve comprehensive rural reform, using land policy as a foundation for peacebuilding and territorial transformation. These efforts support the work of communities, peasant reserve zones, Indigenous territories, and rural women and youth. We believe it is possible to advance simultaneously in achieving greater justice in land tenure, protecting ecosystems, and connecting the territories most affected by armed conflict with the national and international economy and markets."
The Forum is guided by a National Organising Committee of almost 50 organisations, ensuring meaningful Colombian leadership and participation at every level.
“We are at a critical moment in national action on land, peace and rural transformation, and we hope that what emerges from Bogotá will resonate far beyond Colombia's borders - proving that it is possible to put people and territories at the centre of public policy.” said Javier Lautaro Medina of the National Organising Committee and Cinep/PPP.
This year’s Global Land Forum builds on three decades of ILC’s experience in convening diverse actors to advance people-centred land governance.
