Land rights for climate, nature and people!
We are cultivating the next generation of leaders to build a vision from people-centred land governance, and to take action now for a more sustainable and just world.
Secure land and territorial rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities who live on and from the land are critical to addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, the gravest threats to our planet.
Indigenous Peoples and local communities are guardians of our planet and powerful agents of change. They are in a unique position to offer effective solutions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity. Tenure security is central to Indigenous Peoples and local communities to reduce vulnerability, enhance resilience and adapt to climate change. Well-managed collective lands also provide important ecosystem services, contributing to climate change mitigation.
To address the climate crisis, we need to look at change from the eyes and vision of those who will be leading communities, organizations and our world in 2030: the youth.
The ILC Fellowship 2023-2024 is a global 15-month programme for young Indigenous and local communities leaders from ILC members and partners from around the world. It seeks to strengthen the role and leadership of Indigenous youths within their own organisations and communities. We put special emphasis on promoting women’s leadership.
The programme connects youth from around the world; provides tools, knowledge and opportunities; and helps build action that comes from People’s organisations and moves from within the next generation of leaders. It also incubates ideas. Fellows can experiment and learn by exploring concrete solutions to local challenges. ILC provides seed funding for such actions.
Together with our technical partner, the Civil Society Academy, we dive into three dimensions of leadership strengthening to build individual skills, organizational resilience and networking capacity.
Meet the Fellows
Through the programme, Fellows will:
- BE EQUIPPED with the basics on people-centred land governance and the role it plays in facing climate change and biodiversity loss, the principles of collective leadership and a set of improved skills on leadership, gender justice, communications and advocacy to help them design fresh and effective solutions.
- WALK THE TALK, by putting their skills and competencies into practice to design and implement tailored action plans, and making their voices heard in international and regional events as ILC Ambassadors
- BE PART OF A GLOBAL COMMUNITY of support and peer learning with possibilities for future join work, including leading regional actions
- ACCESS TO DIVERSE RESOURCES. The programme offers a Collective Grant Fund of up to 100K USD, which fellows can access to implement their action plans (individual or collective) and to participate in regional learning exchanges. Fellows will also access a wide range of non-financial resources such as training, mentoring and coaching, learning resources and international events.
