Bogotá, Colombia – 20 June 2025 — A new chapter in the global land rights movement was written this week as the 10th Global Land Forum (GLF) concluded in Bogotá with the Bogotá Declaration: Equitable Land Rights for Peace.
The Bogotá declaration
The declaration is a rallying cry for a just, sustainable, and inclusive future — one where land rights are not only protected, but recognised as the foundation for peace, climate resilience, and human dignity.
On the occasion of the GLF, the International Land Coalition (ILC) — celebrating 30 years of collective action — brought together over 1,000 land defenders, Indigenous leaders, women and youth, policymakers, and civil society actors from across the globe.
The Bogotá Declaration lays out a transformative agenda across four urgent fronts: securing land rights for climate and biodiversity justice, reshaping food and energy systems, investing in locally led development, and advancing redistributive land reform as a cornerstone of peace.
“We are not just responding to crises — we are building the future,” the Declaration affirms.
It calls on governments, donors, and international institutions to shift power, resources, and decision-making to the communities most affected by land injustice. It demands that land governance be rooted in human rights, gender justice, and the leadership of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant communities, women, and youth.
Colombia’s commitment to land reform as a path to peace was celebrated as a source of inspiration. The ILC pledged to stand with Colombia as it prepares to host the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development +20 in 2026 — a critical moment to turn global commitments into action.
As the Forum closed, participants left Bogotá not only inspired, but mobilised.
The Bogotá Declaration is more than a statement — it is a shared promise to future generations: that land will be governed for people and planet, not profit and power
