We are in a planetary emergency. Land rights are a way out.

Up to 40% of the world's land is degraded, affecting more than 3 billion people.

Climate breakdown, the collapse of biodiversity and the degradation of land are not three separate crises. They are one emergency, and they meet on the same ground. The hectare that stores carbon is the hectare that holds species, feeds a family and sustains a culture. Degrade it, and all of that is lost at once, and what remains is less able to withstand rising temperatures, deepening drought and extreme weather.

Because land is where these crises converge, it is also where the solutions converge. Many of them lie in a single question: how land is governed, and by whom?

Food systems account for around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and it is industrial, large-scale production that drives biodiversity loss, destroys carbon sinks and deepens food insecurity. Land and the ecosystems it carries are degraded further by resource and mineral extraction, ranging from fossil fuels to the minerals of the "green transition" itself.

More than half of the world's energy transition mining projects sit on or near Indigenous Peoples' lands and territories. They are too often developed without the Free, Prior and Informed Consent or equitable benefit sharing, reproducing the very patterns of injustice the transition is meant to end. In responding to one emergency, we cannot afford to deepen another, while severing the connections to land that make communities able to protect it.Both industrial agriculture and the top-down energy transition destroy local livelihoods and erode communities' connections to land and nature.

Another way is possible.

Where land and territorial rights are secure, the people who live on and from the land are in a position to act: to uphold traditional knowledge and customary governance, to restore land through community-led practice, to steward the biodiversity their livelihoods depend on, and to defend the carbon sinks the rest of the world relies on. Securing those rights is not a side issue in environmental action. It is one of the fastest routes we have to address our global planetary crises.

READ ABOUT OUR IMPACT

A 3-pillar approach

land tenure rights for protecting biodiversity and reversing land degradation -

ILC promotes land rights as a critical cornerstone for community based conservation and restoration initiatives, while being a defense against top down initiatives that undermine land rights, prevent traditional land use practices or lead to land evictions.

land tenure rights as a climate solution

ILC's climate-focused work ensures solutions to fighting climate change are just and equitable and do not undermine the rights of those living off the land. In particular, our work promotes land rights as a basis for carbon and biodiversity markets and other financing initiatives, while highlighting the need to protect land rights in the context of the green energy transition.

land tenure rights for sustainable food systems

ILC works on securing land tenure rights of smallholders, family farmers, pastoralists and other mobile communities highlighting their contribution to reversing land degradation, promoting sustainable land use practices, guaranteeing food security and fighting the climate crisis.

pastoralists save their ecosystem in Kyrgyzstan

"If you treat your land as a mother with respect, then good will come from this land" - Aigul Aidarbekova, woman pastoralist

Tackling the issue

91% of Indigenous Peoples' and local communities' lands and territories are in good or moderate ecological condition. And so as we come together to restore the world’s ecosystems, they already have the solutions that can safeguard the wellbeing of both people and the planet. Explore ways ILC members are working to locally manage their ecosystems, protecting their territories and the world's biodiviersity.

Locally managed ecosystems

Think global, act Local

Our Global Land Catalyst finances National Land Coalitions to engage in national climate and environment advocacy, including influencing the revision of their countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (UNFCCC),  National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (CBD), and the National Action Plans (UNCCD).  Check out what they're doing in the map below.
